Sure, they need to be protected from the elements, but more importantly they must be protected from complacency, from neglect, and from our collective diminished memory.”
- Wayne Goodman
Southern Maine Jewish Cemetery Association maintains two historic cemeteries in Maine: Mount Sinai in Portland and Smith Street in South Portland.
Taking care of our loved ones by renovating and securing the sacred places where they are buried is basic to Judaism. It’s “tikkun olam” (repairing the world) in a literal form. And it’s up to the entire community to make sure it happens.
The resting place of our ancestors should be just as holy as the Seder table, or the synagogue in which we worship.
By refurbishing these historic sites, we aim to revitalize the memory of those past and honor their contributions to our Jewish heritage.
Each year on the Sunday before Memorial Day, a group of volunteers places flags at the grave of each veteran who is buried at Mount Sinai Cemetery, Smith Street Cemetery and other local Jewish cemeteries. This dedicated group makes sure that over 400 veterans are remembered for their service to our country.
